The Huntsman: Winter’s war

“The Huntsman: Winter’s war”, or also known as “The Snow White Chronicles – The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, acts as prequel and sequel to 2012s “Snowwhite and the Huntsman” and is based on the classic fairy tale “Snowwhite”. The film starts with Ravenna (Charlize Theron), the evil queen, and her little sister Freya (Emily Blunt) in the king’s castle. Ravenna kills the king and becomes queen herself, since she just married him. She awaits the day her sister will release her powers and join her to rule the kingdom. These powers are often released by events that change the life of the person. Freya thinks that she will never be like Ravenna, that she isn’t mighty enough or even cunning enough. Freya is in love with a young man and carries his child. She is convinced that once the baby is born he will run away with her. One day she goes out to the gardens to meet him, when she suddenly sees that the tower in which her daughter’s nursery is on fire. Immediately she rushes back inside to find her lover with a torch in his hand. He killed the child because as he said that he didn’t have a choice. Freya’s icy powers are released and her warm personality changes into coldness and the retention of love. She moves north and makes her troops get all the children to transform them into the perfect warriors without love and just filled with the desire to win. Two of her best warriors Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and Sara (Jessica Chastain) fall in love with each other and brake the highest law: Love is forbidden. They are allowed to go peacefully, if they can reach each other. Their ways are separated by other huntsmen and finally by the forces of ice released by Freya. Eric can only watch as Sara is killed by one huntsman behind the other side of the ice wall. Her army is very successful and as Ravenna falls through the defeat by Snowwhite, her kingdom spreads. Many years later Ravenna’s magic mirror gets lost and the king hires Eric and two dwarfs to o and find it, because it has dark powers that when used by Freya could release unknown horrors. They travel along and find companions and face every possible creature when they meet a mysterious cloaked figure…
I really enjoyed watching this film, especially because I went to see it in 3D. I really didn’t like the original film with Snowwhite, but I thought that I should give this one a try since I really like Emily Blunt. The screenplay and animations couldn’t have been more beautiful. The costumes especially the ones for Freya and her sister were simply magnificent. Every gown symbolised the power and passion that was in- or decreasing. While watching the film I had a deja-vu. Freya’s power, her fear of love and her appearance – white hair and icy blue dresses- reminded me a bit of Elsa from Frozen, the early Freya reminded me of Anna from Frozen – a ginger girl in love with love, who believes in the good side of every person. Also her carriage whit polar bears looked like the Ice queen from The Chronicles of Narnia. Still, Emily Blunt’s and Jessica Chastain’s acting was on point and I think that they couldn’t have found a better cast. All in all I recommend this film and I would give it seven and a half lemon drops (two and a half lemons)!
